Our Grandmothers Know Best

Free Life Advice

Who doesn’t love free live advice? I’ve told you all many times on this blog that I love to hear others’ advice on life and this time is no different. I’m only 22, so I have a lot more living left to do and I can’t do it on my own! I consult with others when I need to know what to do in life, so today, I consulted two very important women in my life, my grandmothers. After all, grandmothers know best!

First, I just want to say how amazing it was to talk to them about advice and also just to hear their voices. We all live in different states (TN, SC, and FL), so sometimes it’s hard to keep in touch as much as we’d like to. Thankfully, we have social media and Facetime now!

Grandma’s Advice

My Grandma, Lois, has lived in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for her entire life. As someone living in Nashville who meets someone from a new state everyday, that is just crazy to me! She loves it, though, and she has a strong foundation there. Most of her advice is family- and faith-based because those have been the two most important things in her life. I would like to think that these two things are important in my life, too!

Here are some of her quotes:

  • “Keep your head straight”
  • When asked what has kept her going all this time she replied with, “family, children, and her Husband, Tom”
  • “People need to learn how to think before they speak”
  • “You gotta be able to keep yourself up in order to keep your family up”
  • “Always put God first”

I would also like to add a quote from my Grandma’s mother, “You ought to have your rear end in church every Sunday!” I try, Great Grandma, I try!

My Grandmother, “B”

I call my mom’s mother, ‘B,’ because that’s exactly what she told me to call her when I was little. This name stuck and I still call her that to this day! She grew up in Massachusetts, so contrary to popular belief, I do have some Northern roots 🙂  “B” moved to South Carolina when my mom was a little older and now she lives in sunny Florida. We have definitely had some great times together and I am so thankful. From trips to Disney World, to game nights at the Charleston house, to decorating fondant cake pieces, we have really tried to do it all!

Here are the bits of advice she shared with me:

  • Most importantly, “Have fun and be careful”
  • “Buy stocks”
  • “Travel before you get married because you need to figure yourself out before you figure someone else out.” My life might be heading in a different direction from this one 🙂
  • When asked what has kept her going all this time she replied with, “Just knowing that I’m not done living and learning. I’m also not done teaching either.”

The last one is absolutely true, and this post just goes right along with it! She’s teaching all of us right here in this blog!

Thank You

I appreciate both of these women so much! Little things like this make me realize just how much we can learn from the people who have lived more life than we have. Never take that for granted and just remember, Grandmother knows best!
